Milestones in our history

2009

GlobalFoundries is founded

GlobalFoundries is formed as a joint venture between Mubadala and AMD to address growing global demand for advanced semiconductors. From the outset, we are established with a mission to deliver differentiated manufacturing and technology capabilities at global scale.

2010 & 2015

Expanding global manufacturing scale

We accelerate our global footprint through the acquisition of Chartered Semiconductor in Singapore in 2010 and IBM’s microelectronics business in 2015, including fabs and intellectual property. These moves establish GF as a scaled foundry with deep capabilities across RF, silicon photonics and advanced manufacturing.

2013

Advanced manufacturing takes shape in the U.S.

Construction begins on Fab 8 in Malta, New York, the first advanced foundry built in the U.S. in decades. The site becomes a cornerstone of our advanced manufacturing strategy, delivering initial silicon “first time right” as production ramps.

2018

Differentiation through FDX™ FD-SOI & RF leadership

We introduce our FDX™ FD-SOI platform and become the world’s leading RF-SOI foundry. This period reflects a strategic pivot toward differentiated, feature‑rich technologies optimized for power efficiency, connectivity and critical end markets.

2021

GlobalFoundries becomes a public company

We complete our initial public offering, listing our shares on Nasdaq under the symbol GFS. The IPO marks a new chapter, increasing visibility and supporting long‑term investment in manufacturing scale and differentiated technology leadership.

2022–2026

Expanding capabilities & acquisitions

Following our IPO, we accelerate growth through targeted acquisitions and technology agreements—Tagore Technology, MIPS, Advanced Micro Foundry, InfiniLink and Synopsys’ ARC Processor IP business—strengthening our leadership in power, silicon photonics, optical connectivity and processor IP to advance AI data center solutions.
