U.S. Made Secure Chips

GF is the only company manufacturing secure essential chips at scale in the United States.

We provide partners an assured supply of the chips they need, manufactured where they need them, and with the highest levels of security.

The GF Advantage:

An assured supply of essential semiconductors built in a secure manufacturing environment with supply chain transparency.

Proven Partnerships

Key partners trust GlobalFoundries to manufacture the secure chips they need at scale, and have been doing so for decades.

Trusted Foundry: The Proven Security Solution

The Trusted Foundry Program is the fastest, most cost effective, and most efficient process for the U.S. Department of Defense to obtain the microelectronics it needs.

The proven Trusted Foundry Program is the DoD’s strongest assurance of a company’s ability to produce uncompromised chips for aerospace and defense systems. GF meets the U.S. government’s highest security standards for all aspects of designing and producing classified, secure semiconductor components, both physical and digital.

We are the largest and most advanced foundry in the Trusted Foundry network, and the only one capable of producing essential chips at scale.

Assured Supply

GF is proud to be the only chipmaker producing essential chips securely and at scale inside the United States:

  • With fabs strategically located in Burlington, Vermont, and Malta, New York, as well as Germany and Singapore, you can trust that global disruptions will not compromise your supply of essential chips.
  • You can trust that your chips are being made in the most secure environments, using the most secure processes.
  • You can trust that you will have the chips you need for the applications of today and tomorrow—optimized to mission objectives and providing overmatch.

Imagine if critical national security hardware could not be built, maintained, or repaired because of an inadequate supply of essential chips. Don’t let this happen to you.

Supply Chain Transparency

Traditional semiconductor supply chains are inherently opaque. This approach is no longer fit for purpose in an increasingly insecure geopolitical and commercial environment.

With GF’s end-to-end traceability, you will have complete transparency of the provenance of your securely manufactured essential chips.

Proven Manufacturing Security

As an accredited Trusted Foundry and Common Criteria certified supplier, GF employs the most stringent processes, equipment, and oversight necessary for protecting sensitive information and manufacturing chips with the highest levels of security. At our facilities in New York and Vermont, we ensure secure and uncompromised delivery for critical end uses.

Trusted Foundry

The U.S. Department of Defense’s Trusted Foundry Program is the DoD’s strongest assurance of a company’s ability to produce uncompromised chips for aerospace and defense systems. GF is the largest and most advanced foundry in the Trusted Foundry network, and the only one capable of producing chips at scale.

Common Criteria

GF holds a Common Criteria certification, an internationally recognized standard for producing goods that require an extra level of security and integrity in the manufacturing process.

GF Shield

These protections are further strengthened by GF’s industry-leading, comprehensive GF Shield security platform, designed to safeguard and protect our customers’ intellectual property and products.

Chips not following this approach risk being compromised and subsequently—remotely or otherwise—triggered to shut down a system or perform other damaging actions by those with ill intents. We must prevent this from happening, to protect both national and economic security.”

Ezra Hall, GF Senior Director of Aerospace and Defense Business

Differentiated Solutions

GF’s differentiated, U.S.-made chip solutions provide unique, mission-enabling capabilities and optimized performance and reliability for aerospace, defense and critical infrastructure applications. GF drives innovation and enhances the security of chips used in crucial systems, including power grids and wireless communications to banking, hospitals and national security systems and satellites.

Features of these chip technologies include:

  • Operating in harsh environments and space
  • Class-leading millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications capabilities
  • Communicating with photons instead of electrons for extreme performance at lowest possible power
  • Embedded non-volatile memory

What else would you expect from chips used in the International Space Station?

Delivering Advanced Power-Management Functionality

GF chips have a game-changing ability to integrate combinations of high-performance signal processing, power, RF communications, and memory onto a system-on-a-chip (SoC).

Instead of large, heavy power-hungry racks comprised of many boards containing many chips, SoC systems can be designed into one or several chips to not only perform the same functionality, but extend capabilities, range, reduce size, weight, and power. That’s a game-changer, especially for the increasingly smaller and more pervasive defense applications of the future.

Trusted Foundry:
The Proven Security Solution

The Trusted Foundry model has proven effective over many years at supplying secure access to microelectronics for certain classes of DoD and national security systems.”

Dr. David Honey, DoD Deputy Under Secretary of   Defense for Research and Engineering,   April 21, 2022

The U.S. Department of Defense’s Trusted Foundry Program is the DoD’s strongest assurance of a company’s ability to produce uncompromised chips for aerospace and defense systems. GF meets the U.S. government’s gold standard for all aspects of designing and producing classified, secure semiconductor components, both physical and digital.

The GF team pioneered the Trusted Foundry program, first with the NSA and now with the Defense Microelectronics Activity. Today, GF is the largest and most advanced foundry in the Trusted Foundry network, and the only one capable of producing essential chips at scale.

GF’s U.S. sites have Trusted Foundry accreditation, with stringent security processes, equipment, and oversight in place to accept and protect sensitive information and manufacture Trusted chips in a way that ensures they are secure and uncompromised:

Proven Partnerships

Lockheed Martin

In June 2023, GF and Lockheed Martin announced a strategic collaboration to advance U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and innovation and increase the security, reliability and resiliency of domestic supply chains for national security systems. The companies will leverage GF’s differentiated technology and trusted manufacturing practices to increase anti-fragility in microelectronics systems and supply chains. As a result, Lockheed Martin can more quickly and affordably produce secure solutions that increase the competitiveness and national security of the United States.

When you have complex supply chains, there are a lot of parts that change hands. If there’s fewer parts that change hands, that reduces your fragility.  Going right to GF only decreases our complexity.”

DoD DMEA

In September 2023, the DoD awarded GF a 10-year, $3.1 billion contract to supply securely manufactured, U.S.-made semiconductors for use across a wide range of critical aerospace and defense applications.

DoD had confidence to award this contract through the Trusted Access Program Office in part because GF is the only semiconductor manufacturer in the U.S. capable of producing the chips the DoD needs at scale.

This new contract is the third sequential 10-year contract of its kind between the DoD and the Trusted Foundry business team at GF and is the latest milestone in the longstanding partnership between the department and the company. Click here to learn more about the importance and impact of GF’s Trusted Foundry accreditations.

Read more about the GF-DoD partnership here.

This partnership provides DoD programs with ‘front-door access’ to advanced technologies in a way that is scalable and highly efficient. For this work, GF is accredited to provide the right level of security required for each program, from GF’s industry leading GF Shield protections, to strictly export controlled handling (e.g. ITAR), to the highest level of accredited microelectronics manufacturing security on the planet, Trusted Category 1A.”

Mike Cadigan, GF Chief Corporate and Government Affairs Officer

Raytheon

In 2021, GF and Raytheon agreed to collaborate to develop and commercialize a new gallium nitride on silicon (GaN-on-Si) semiconductor that will enable game-changing radio frequency performance for 5G and 6G mobile and wireless infrastructure applications.
